There are thousands of placements of graduate schemes each year at a wide range of companies. There are thousands of graduates each year that are looking for places on graduate schemes. However, the problem is that there are far more graduates than placements on Graduate Schemes. Therefore, it is necessary to be well prepared for Graduate Assessment Centres to ensure that you are a step ahead of the other candidates.

Why Graduate Schemes?

People want to join Graduate Schemes for good reasons. They are often structured supported by HR and management to ensure that their organisation has Succession, so entry-level graduates are encouraged to develop and become management. Therefore, you are likely to gain from a major investment being made by a company to push your career forward.

You will always most likely join the company with many other graduates, who will be your peers for now. However, in the future, they will become your network, useful contacts, business opportunities, job openings and most importantly all your lifelong friends.

However, missing out on a Graduate scheme is not necessarily a problem in the UK economy, as there are so many entry-level jobs that offer similar options. The key is that you will just have to do a little more research and plan your own development in the absence of HR.

Get onto a Graduate Scheme?

Firstly, you should try to make it clear as to what type of Graduate Scheme, job types and company truly interests you. The most suitable the choice the better the chances of you convincing a prospective interviewer that you are genuinely interested in the programme and company.

You should then do your research, this means finding out about the job and the skills that you need to be a success in the job. This will mean that you can start to think about what the ideal interview answers will be as well as this is a long process of building an understanding of what is required in an interview.

University Careers Fairs

Then you should go to the Careers Fairs at your University and any others at major centres. This will enable you to network and ask questions to get the information on the company you need to demonstrate that you did your research in the interviews. Take away brochures as the message that the employers are trying to project will be shown in the material.

Now you need to research what the application and assessment process entails. Many companies have forums set up by candidates that help a lot, as they can give you tips on how to get through.

The majority of Graduate programmes contain competency-based interviews. You should research what are the most common Competencies and prepare model answers in advance. This could mean learning and reciting to a friend or parent your model answer.

Now it will be time to start applying and put all of this research into practice. I have compiled this advice from a number of my past students who have had either success or failure in this process and this is the result of their stories. Start your preparation early as it affects your chances and the best opportunities can go first of all.
